You don’t need a Foxtel subscription to watch the races. Plenty of options stream Australian horse racing live, and most of them are free. Here’s the practical rundown.
Free streaming options
Through a TAB account
The easiest free option. Open an account with TAB (NSW, VIC) or TABtouch (WA), and Sky Racing 1 and 2 stream live in your account. You don’t need to deposit money or place a bet to access the streams. Just create the account, log in, and the live channels are there.
This covers the bulk of Australian thoroughbred meetings, plus a fair chunk of harness and greyhound racing.
Bookmaker streams
Most major Australian bookmakers offer live streaming once you have an account. Sportsbet, Bet365, Ladbrokes and Neds all carry a wide range of meetings. Coverage is broadly similar to the TABs (Sky Racing feeds), and again, you generally don’t need to bet to watch, though some operators require a recent deposit or a small bet to unlock streaming.
If you’re already opening accounts to shop for the best price, this is a useful side benefit.
Racing.com
Racing.com is Racing Victoria’s official streaming service and covers all Victorian thoroughbred meetings free. The website and app stream live with no account required. The app also covers replays, which is useful if you missed a meeting and want to review form.
Racing NSW and Racing Queensland
Each state’s racing body runs its own free streaming through their websites and apps, though coverage focuses on local meetings. Worth checking if you’re following a specific carnival.
Paid options
Sky Racing on Foxtel and Kayo
If you want a TV-based experience and don’t want to log into a TAB account every time, Sky Racing 1 and Sky Thoroughbred Central are part of the standard Foxtel sports packages. Kayo Sports also carries Sky Racing as part of its general subscription.
This is the option if you want the races on the big screen rather than a phone or laptop.
Sky Racing day pass
If you only want to watch a particular day’s racing without committing to a subscription or opening accounts, Sky Racing sells a single-day digital pass through their website. Useful for the spring carnival if you’re hosting people and don’t want to mess about with logins.
Which option suits which punter
For most casual viewers, a free TAB account is enough. It covers virtually all the racing you’re likely to want to watch, and the stream is solid.
If you bet across multiple bookmakers anyway, your existing accounts probably already include streaming. No need to duplicate.
If you want a hands-off TV setup, Foxtel or Kayo via Sky Racing is the cleanest path.
If you only watch racing once or twice a year (Melbourne Cup carnival, for example), a single-day Sky pass is cheaper than committing to anything else.
A few practical notes
Stream quality varies. The TAB streams are functional but not always crystal clear. Racing.com and the racing body apps are usually the cleanest free streams. Bookmaker streams sit somewhere in the middle.
Coverage gaps exist. Some midweek country meetings, particularly in WA and the NT, can be hard to find on any platform. If you’re betting on a meeting and want to watch it, check coverage before you commit.
International racing (UK and US) is generally only available via Sky Racing or Racing.com, with some restrictions.
Streaming uses data. If you’re watching on mobile, it’ll burn through your plan quickly. Worth being on Wi-Fi for full meetings.
